Opportunities

Agent Hunter

The smart way to find the right UK agent. Agent Hunter is a database of all UK literary agents, their agencies and publishers. The database is regularly updated, continually fact-checked, and as comprehensive as we can make it. You can sort the entries on our database to develop your own personal shortlist of agents. (I’ve tried this and it really is an excellent way of filtering to suit your preferences. Highly recommended! – Jill)

Bigger Short Story Comp

Words with JAM’s annual competition for Short, Shorter and Shortest Stories – Judges include agent David Haviland, author Polly Courtney and one of Nuance’s favourite writers, Susan Jane Gilman. Juicy prizes plus publication in the anthology.

Harper’s Bazaar

Enter this short-story competition and win a first-edition book from Asprey’s Fine and Rare Books Department, plus a week-long retreat on the private island in Scotland where JM Barrie wrote his screenplay of Peter Pan. The winning story will also be published in the May 2014 issue of Harper’s Bazaar

13th Short Story Conference

Look what’s happening just next door.

The 13th International Conference on the Short Story in English, (15*)16 to 19 July, 2014, Vienna, Austria.

Theme: Unbraiding the Short Story

This conference will bring writers of fiction in English (Irish, British, American, Canadian, Australian, Caribbean, South-African, Indian, Sri Lankan, Indonesian, etc.) and writers who have had (or will have for this event) their work translated into English together with scholars of the short story,  and all will join in reading sessions, roundtable discussions and panels, and translation workshops.
